Pre and Post Op Tips for Spine Surgery with Dr. Robinson

It is important to be prepared before surgery to make sure that there is a clear understanding of which medicines can be continued and which should be stopped and how far in advance some medicines need to be stopped prior to surgery.

As a former surgical patient, I can attest that recovery is extremely important. The patient likely will be in the hospital for a few days following the surgery, so it’s important to be up walking the halls of the hospital as soon as possible. The Physical therapist and Occupational Therapist will work closely with the patient prior to discharge. Some pain, including muscle spasms after surgery is normal but for out of proportion or progressive pain, patients should contact our office.

Following discharge from the hospital, walking is the best medicine and it is important to walk up to three to four times a day 10 to 15 minutes each. As patients get further out from surgery, they can increase the walking distance, depending on what their body is telling them.
